The country faced a difficult start in the 1990s, with hundreds of thousands being robbed of their life savings by government-sponsored Ponzi schemes. The subsequent violent unrest and UN intervention delayed its development by at least a decade and among the most prominent politicians who arose from that time of troubles was none other than Edi Rama.
